Staying Present (And Beyond)
So, we speak about staying present or being present, but is there a state of being beyond presence?
Does something happen when we are present that allows us to move into another state of being?
In my experience as a yoga teacher and in my meditation journey, staying present starts with observing and accepting.
So, instead of just observing, you accept whatever “is.”
That’s the start of being present with whatever Life is giving you.
Through the practice of meditation, I had more stillness in my mind and I was then able to stay with the present moment.
This doesn’t mean not thinking about the future or the past. It means not getting lost in it.
You can plan about the future while being in the present. If you’re planning a tour that’s coming up, a vacation with your family, or something for your business.
But you have to be present with the idea of the future.
The difference is you are not projecting yourself into the future saying, “I’m now over there, and I’m feeling everything in that position.”
You’re just doing the plan, but here in the present.
The stillness of my mind gave me more presence in my day-to-day.
And when I would realize I was not present, that would bring me back to presence.
Also remembering about awareness of my breath, having a meditation routine.
But as we know, that was really just the beginning of the journey.
Connection Gave Me Presence: Every time I went to the Yoga matt or closed my eyes or immersed myself in Kirtan in singing, chanting or mantras. It was all about being connected to something deeper.
Until our Inner Energy became activate in such a way that now we know that presence, or through presence, that’s where action flowers. That’s where everything flowers.
I’ve experienced many times where there are no thoughts about the future, no thoughts about the past, not even any thoughts about the present moment.
It’s incredible because this isn’t just happening during my practice. It can be anytime throughout the day.
Sometimes, my own mind checks in on my mind! “Are you still there? Because you’re not talking anymore!”
It’s this idea of being able to look at a tree but not have the mental label of “Tree” jump out automatically. Or immediately think about the description of whether it is big or small or beautiful.
With presence, you can see things in their fundamental state.
Moving beyond that, through presence you can connect to your Inner Energy and this is where the Divinity within you can actually guide you in your life.
Most of the time you are extremely present when your Inner Energy is guiding you, but your mind doesn’t even have to be that present to be guided once you are connected.
That’s one of the most beautiful things because your Inner Energy can activate when it realizes you need a little support.
You don’t need to have that pure meditative state to be guided once you are connected to your Inner Energy.
It’s so beautiful how it teaches us to be better human beings.
Presence is this ability to have awareness and observation and from that act consciously. But beyond that, with your Inner Energy, it’s this awareness, this observation, but then the Divine guiding you in your life which is really special.
